A mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure that repositions the breasts higher while improving their shape. A breast lift can address breast ptosis (drooping), nipples that are positioned lower on the breasts than is desired, and asymmetry between the breasts. Excess skin and sometimes a small amount of breast gland/tissue are removed. The remaining breast tissue is repositioned on the chest wall, elevating and reducing the size of the nipple areolar complex as desired. We sometimes perform breast lifts in combination with or prior to a breast augmentation.

Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?
A breast lift can be a good option for any patient who is bothered by sagging breasts, regardless of their size. Breast lifts can correct size and shape concerns regarding the nipple areolar complex, whether they are too low on the breast or pointing downwards. We commonly perform breast lifts for patients who have lost weight or mothers who find that pregnancy and breastfeeding has left them with a depleted breast shape. The right candidate will also need to be comfortable with the fact that although breast lift incisions will heal and fade, scars may remain visible to a degree, in exchange for an overall improved shape. You should be in good overall health before pursuing cosmetic surgery.
What will my breast lift surgery be like?
Mastopexy surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our fully accredited in-house operating facility and takes 1.5-2 hours. Incisions are usually made in the shape of a ‘lollipop’, encircling the areola and extending vertically down the lower portion of the breasts. In the case of larger breasts, the incision may be extended along the inframammary fold. Any breast tissue that is removed will be sent to the lab to screen for breast cancer. Following surgery, our attentive medical team will monitor your initial recovery in the calm, comfortable setting of our in-house recovery room.
How long is the recovery from a breast lift?
You will be seen in-clinic by our postoperative nurses around 1-2 weeks after your surgery, and additionally as needed to support your recovery journey. You can expect mild to moderate bruising and swelling, peaking at around 72 hours and slowly resolving over the first few weeks. Mild to moderate discomfort is normal after breast lift surgery. Slight breast asymmetry is quite commonly seen in the early stages of healing. Specific dressing and wound care instructions will be provided by your nurse. For out-of-town patients, there is the option to recover at the adjoined Parkside Hotel.
We can often recommend an early return to walking and hiking. You can typically resume your gym and workout routine at four weeks, slowly working up to full activity at six weeks. You should refrain from any strenuous lifting or strain to the upper body while you heal.
As with any surgery, the healing process can vary from patient to patient and your final results will depend on many individual factors. It is important to be patient with your body and allow yourself time to rest and recuperate.
